FED: New map reveals secrets of Murray Darling Basin
The landscape and soil secrets of Australia's foodbowl, the Murray-Darling Basin, will be
revealed today in a new map which details the region in a kaleidoscope of colours.
The map represents a mammoth one-year undertaking by CSIRO scientists to convert a mountain
of information into a form which can be understood by scientists and layman alike.
CSIRO land and water scientist Dr ELISABETH BUI says earlier maps of the Murray-Darling,
compiled by surveyors and explorers, have provided only general information.
She says the new map and a database will allow easy planning for the region including
assessment and avoidance of threats like soil loss, sedimentation and salinity.
Dr BUI says the map can also help Australia assess how much greenhouse gas its soil absorbs
in the emerging world trade in greenhouse emisssions.
